Species-specific training on ruminants: sheep and cattle
BCLAS organises two species-specific trainings focusing on ruminants used in research. Each training focuses on one species and combines theoretical background with a hands-on practical session.
Participants may attend one training separately or both trainings.
Participants attending both the sheep and cattle specific trainings receive a €50 reduction on the total price.
Content
During these species-specific trainings we will:

Discuss the use of ruminants (sheep and cattle) in different types of research
-
Elaborate on pain and analgesia in ruminants (sheep and cattle)
In addition, each workshop includes a demonstration and hands-on practical session.
Cattle training includes:

Observation and approach of cows in different housing systems
-
Handling and fixation of cows
-
Clinical examination of cattle including demonstration of blood sampling sites and different injection techniques
Sheep training includes:
-
Observation and approach of sheep in different housing systems
-
Handling and fixation of sheep
-
Hoof care
-
Clinical examination of sheep including demonstration of blood sampling and different injection techniques
Format
Species specific workshop where you will receive both theoretical knowledge and hands-on training.
Target audience & requirements for this workshop
Caretakers, technicians and researchers working with ruminants (sheep or cattle) in the near future.
A FELASA B certificate is necessary to attend the workshop. We also expect participants to have followed the following ETPLAS modules (as the theory further builds on these modules):

Module 3.1: Basic and Appropriate Biology Ruminants

Module 5: Recognition of Pain Suffering and Distress Ruminants

Certificate
Each workshop accounts for 4.5 hours of continuing professional development in Laboratory Animal Science and is considered de facto accredited.
Language
Presentations will be given in English. During the practical session, attendees are encouraged to express themselves in the language of their choice.
Whether you choose to speak English, French or Dutch, our facilitators will ensure an inclusive environment where all contributions are valued and understood.
