Species-specific training: Sheep

This workshop focuses on working with sheep in a research context and combines theoretical input with hands-on practical training.

During this training, we will:

  • Discuss the use of ruminants (sheep and cattle) in different types of research

  • Address pain recognition and the use of analgesia in ruminants

  • Provide a practical session in sheep, including:

    • Observation and approach of sheep in different housing systems

    • Handling and fixation of sheep

    • Hoof care

    • Clinical examination of sheep, including blood sampling and injection techniques

Format

Species-specific workshop with both theory and practical training.

Target audience and requirements

This workshop is intended for caretakers, technicians and researchers who work with sheep or will do so in the near future.

Participation requires:

  • A FELASA B certificate

  • Prior completion of the following ETPLAS modules:

    • Module 3.1: Basic and Appropriate Biology – Ruminants

    • Module 5: Recognition of Pain, Suffering and Distress – Ruminants

Certificate

This workshop accounts for 4.5 hours of continuing professional development in Laboratory Animal Science and is considered de facto accredited.

Language

Presentations will be given in English.
During the practical session, participants may speak English, French or Dutch.
