KU Leuven Laboratory Animal Center organizes a workshop on severity assessment of animal experiments.
The objective of this interactive workshop is to learn how to estimate the severity score of animal experiments. First the definitions in the Belgian legislation will be explained: what is mild, moderate, severe and non-recovery (examples will be given). What is the difference between prospective and actual severity? Subsequently, all factors that determine the severity of an animal experiment are explained: not only the procedure-related factors are important but also the frequency, phenotype, etc. Afterwards, a practical estimation of severity is made: how should this be done? This is demonstrated by means of a number of elaborated examples.
This is an interactive workshop that will take place at at Campus Gasthuisberg, KU Leuven and will be led by Stéphanie De Vleeschauwer, designated veterinarian, Laboratory Animal Center, KU Leuven.
